. THE VILLAGE MARKET
Think Globally, Shop Locally
Most of us do the bulk of our shopping in supermarkets, as a matter of convenience. Lately, though, there has been increasing concern about the changing face of our high streets due to the uncontrolled growth of the influence of the 'major players'. Here at The Southfields Times we believe in supporting local traders as much as possible and so retain the charcter of where we live. But by way of comparison see the new posting by 'The Active Consumer' on our Soap Box.

Go Green, Grocers
For environmental reasons many of us are refusing the plastic bags offered by local shops. Local traders are sensitive to our requests so maybe they can supply cheap, re-useable bags and help make Southfields A PLASTIC BAG-FREE ZONE
UPDATE
28/02/08
Today's publicty stunt by a major retailer who proposes to charge 5p for a disposable plastic carrier bag, though seeming like a step in the right direction must be seen for what it is. Click on our UNGREEN GROCERS link for more information.

FIND PARKING A PAIN? JOIN OUR CAMPAIGN
Local traders have contacted the ST expressing concerns about parking restictions affecting trade. Extended parking times would make local shopping a more enjoyable, even leisurely experience. let us know your views. For a useful link, see our DIRECTORY
UPDATE

Government's attempts to 'tinker at the edges' of the dominance of the main supermarkets overlooks their main advantage. No, not lower prices but free parking which is provided by local councils' generous allocation of land.
